FORENSIC WORKSHOPS
“Science is in everything that we do and it can be magical or it can help us to solve problems and it will be used to
solve problems in our sessions.
DNA Does Not Lie” . . .
Kenniss Henry, Wild Science Incorporated
Next Workshop: Workshops will be held at the monthly Patro-Tech Science Club Meeting on every 3rd Saturday of the month beginning September 20, 2008.
General information: Students will participate in hands-on workshops that invite them to discover the fun and exciting world of forensics and the effects of DNA in our world today.
Program: The “Fun with Forensics” Workshop will provide students with the opportunity to interact in the basic elements of forensics. The crime scene investigations promote critical thinking skills that relate to the application of science to decide questions arising from crime or litigation.
The students will become first-rate sleuths using techniques detectives and forensic scientists use everyday to solve crimes. The art of fingerprinting, DNA analysis, entomology, odentology, and lie detector testing will be examined during this course and used to solve a mock crime. Students will learn to handle a crime scene, photograph the area, collect and process clues. Students will demonstrate their newly acquired skills at the end of the course as they develop a crime scene and explain what happens and the techniques used to solve the mystery.
Patriots has partnered with SciLIFE at the National Institute of Health (NIH). SciLIFE is a government agency that helps students that have an interest in health and biomedical science careers. A career planning program is scheduled for October 18, 2008 from 8:30am – 4:30pm at the Natcher Building (NIH) Campus, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD (Building 45) (accessible by Metrorail: Medical Center). This free 1-day event includes:
- Inside info from science pros
- Focused career workshops for students and their parents
- Lunch
- Resource pack with post-high school planning and financial guidance
For program and registration info: http://scoemce/edicatopm.nih.gov/sciLIFE - Please register by October 4th.
Business and government support: We have attended field trips to the National Institute of Health, the Koshland Science Museum, and the SciLIFE Conference. This enables our students to partake of visual and literary applications of science. During the Youth Summit, the Prince George’s Police Department Forensic Team has provided a Forensic Van in support of displaying the ways in which the County encounters investigations with the use of forensics.
