2022 Bio-Medical Competition – April 23rd

General information:  The Bio-Medical Competition will provide students the opportunity to complete a study on medical science careers.

Program:  Five teams of two middle and/or high school students will research a specific science career listed below.  From there, they will then write a research paper with a maximum of three pages, in addition to preparing a brochure, a web page, and a poster board display.  At the competition, after the judges score each group, the team’s knowledge will be tested while playing a Kahoot game based on a set of questions previously provided to each team. Scoring of the Kahoot game will be incorporated in the overall competition scoring to determine the winners.

Each team will be able to choose from one of the following topics for research:

Schools: The virtual competition will be among middle and high school students throughout the United States.

Awards Program: Students are required to submit their abstract by February 19, 2022.  A panel of medical science industry professionals will review the students’ abstract paper and will create 30 questions for the students to study for the Kahoot game.  The competition will consist of a panel of medical science professionals that will judge the students’ research papers and projects at a dinner with community residents, parents, and elected officials on April 19, 2022, at the Crowne Plaza in Greenbelt, Maryland. The winners of this competition will be announced at this event.

Prizes:

–  1st Place: Each member of the team will receive a $100 Cash Gift Card

–  2nd Place: Each member of the team will receive a $50 Cash Gift Card

–  3rd Place: Each member of the team will receive a $25 Cash Gift Card

Business and Government Support: Several professionals from the science medical industry will be recruited to assist as instructors, mentors, and technical advisors.  This project will significantly impact the community by bringing attention to the awareness of available careers in the medical science industry.

Fee:  Free. You must be an active member of the Patriots/NSBE Jr. Chapter to compete in Kahoot and win Prizes.

Expectations

Mentor Expectations (Adult)

  • Complete online registration form. Click here.
  • Attend the Patriots Back to School Summit (or have a corporate representative).
  • Commit to serving as an E-Mentor for at least 1 year.
  • Respond to online submitted questions within 48 hours.
  • If unable to answer an online question, please notify the E-Mentoring website administrator with 24 hours.
  • Consider hosting a virtual online workshop.
  • Please inform Patriots if you would like to include other company representatives.
  • Complete an end-of-the-year E-Mentoring program evaluation.

Mentee Expectations (Student)

  • Attend the Patriots Back to School Summit.
  • Commit to participation in the E-Mentoring program for at least 1 year.
  • Attend at least 8 webinars.
  • Ask respectful and inquisitive questions.
  • Respect the response from the E-Mentor.
  • Participate in the Patriots’ monthly virtual workshops/competitions.
  • Complete an end-of-the-year E-Mentoring program evaluation.
  • Become a member of the Patriots/NSBE Jr Chapter (complete the registration form so that we will have an idea of your career goal).
